The Most Important Revolution is a Mental One
Save the world by saving yourself
Let me be honest with you guys, and as someone who claims to be cultured and loves history, its embarrassing to admit that I have never heard the original “the revolution will not be televised” poem by gil schott-heron. I always heard it sampled in hip hop, and I always thought it was some cold ass revolutionary shit to say. But I never heard the whole thing or understood the actual meaning, I assumed bro was going along the lines of censorship and propaganda.
But while traversing the digital seas of information looking to curate a fine selection of relevant content for this particular digest. I came upon a few memes that lead me to the full poem.
It freaked me out… on one hand, here I am once again forming similar opinions to great creatives before me, something I have talked about that really excites me, gets me going. But on the other hand, its like, can’t I be original for once!? I’m so late to the game that everything’s already been thought of. Everything’s a copy as someone wise told me.
All the same, we shall continue reverberating truth and light.
From a young age I have been obsessed with the power of the mind and perspective. Its the key or driving force to your experience and you have total control of it. Before I heard any other revolutionary say it, I was already saying “freedom lies within the mind”. My first tattoo idea was “libertas est en mente” which google told me meant freedom lies within the mind in latin, but now it says its “libertas in animo”.. guess its good I didn’t get that tattoo lol but the point stands. Freedom is not external.
Nothing changes if nothing changes
Sometimes we need to change the way we see things, the way we think about things to get a bigger and fuller picture. Sometimes we need to change the way we talk, the way we walk, the way we do things, how we approach, how we move. Change our bad habits, our negative energy. Many times we want change without putting in the action to initiate that change. But nothing changes if nothing changes. We have to be the change we want to see.
Perhaps the best thing to do to start the path of change is become aware of the power of your mind.
Whose coming to save us? What if we saved ourselves?
Perception is Key.
I call this finding gratitude through perspective, and its a secret power.
Here’s one perspective shift that may help you in practice.
In a book I am working on, called, “The 3 In’s to the live you want to live”, one of the pillars is, Individuality. Being independent, self reliant, your own person with critically formed thoughts. I always saw the idea of individualism, at least most parts, as something I could get behind. I find myself confused by some of the criticisms, sure I can understand some of them, but of course I’m sure there are countless interpretations as the pope example showcases.
I see misconceptions that this world view can mean you are selfish, or caring only for yourself and not the collective. Couldn’t be further from the truth as its in my perspective that strong individuals, make a strong group when needed. And with such strong individuals perhaps a group may not be needed as much.
Think about this, when a plane is going down, they want you to secure your own mask before trying to help others, think of why that is?
I guess my point is don’t get upset when someone gives you flack for wanting to be better off so you can better serve and spread light. We all have to find our own way.
“Everyone’s gotta find their own way” best advice ever from willem dafoe
Choose to detach from that which does not serve you. Save the world by saving yourself. Being aware and controlling your power is how we will win the great spiritual war.
